Santa Barbara Senior Photo Shoot

As I mentioned on this post I attended United this year.  Last year was an amazing experience and so I was not about to let it happen this year without being there.

It’s hard to explain what United is because it’s not like any other conference I’ve ever attended.  First of all, it’s put on by my website company (Showit) – This company is made up of amazing exemplary men and women who lead by example in serving with love and an outpouring of encouragement for the road.  Each year Showit puts on this amazing conference unlike any other photography conference.  The focus isn’t really on shoots or products or what “rockstar” photographer is going to speak or present their award winning album or print.  Rather it’s a time for inspiration and motivation.  A time where we are challenged to live for more.  A time where we are reminded to not take our God given talents for granted.  We are pushed to serve with our whole being and most of all to love others through our businesses.

By now you know why it is that I go each year.  While United is not about the shoots we do have the opportunity to sign up for a few shoots.  These are shoots that other seasoned photographers put together (get the concept of service being echoed everywhere?).  These photographers give of themselves to style, prepare and teach the shoot.  There is always a mad rush to sign up for your chosen 6 or so shoots.  Last year I signed up for as many as I could.  Waking up at 4:30 to make it to sunrise shoots after staying up late visiting with colleagues.  This time around, I tried not to stress about what shoots I got into and what sessions I participated in– In fact I even carved some time to lounge out at the pool for some “me” time at United (more on that later— maybe!).  I just didn’t want to be overwhelmed with too many classes and knowledge sitting in my brain so I wanted to absorb and process.

I did make a point to leave the pool lounge chair to attend this Senior Shoot.  I love photographing Seniors and wanted to see someone else’s take on how they approach the session as well as preparing the senior and working through the shoot itself.  Ann Keen of  Ann Keen Photography lead a wonderful shoot and here are a few of my favorite captures from my time at her class.  {thank you so much Ann!!!}

We began the shoot with four senior girls and shot a bit of a “friends” type session to begin with.  We then broke out into small groups and got to choose a Senior girl to work with- and work with her personally.  I loved that the groups were so small that each of us got to really set up the shot we were about to take.  No crazy paparazzi type shooting here- which made this structured girl so happy!! Santa Barbara Senior Photos // Oregon Coast, Oregon Portrait & Wedding Photographer | Imago Dei Photography | Xiomara Gard

We photographed at The Fess Parker Resort in Santa Barbara.  I love the architecture in this little town and in this resort.  When I had opportunity to work with this beauty I chose to incorporate a bit of the architecture and the atmosphere of The Fess Parker that I so love.  Santa Barbara Senior Photos // Oregon Coast, Oregon Portrait & Wedding Photographer | Imago Dei Photography | Xiomara Gard

Leaving the courtyard of the Fess Parker we decided to venture a bit and explore the surrounding area.  It wasn’t a long walk until we found more Santa Barbara beauty.  This time in form of this bit of lavender. By that time we were in the magical golden light hour and it’s hard to take a bad photograph in this light in my honest opinion! I just LOVE dreamy light, don’t you!

Sadly the light didn’t last long because all of a sudden the winds literally changed and brought a strong fog with it.  And in a matter of minutes it was gone and left this weird hazy bright light.  It was thunderstorm type weather but Melissa was such a trooper! {thank you so much Melissa!}
