Rachel’s mom contacted me at the beginning of the year. She had heard about our work from a friend and knew that we do custom stylized sessions for each of our clients. She and her daughter had envisioned an intimate session in the family homestead in Salem. A few months after they booked their session I drove out and met with them for a consult. As I scheduled my day I did what I normally do for a consult session; gave myself driving time plus an hour and 15 minutes for the consult. Things were a bit different with this darling family though. We sat and talked in the comfort of their home for a few hours. We discussed the session and outfits and even walked all through their family property but we spent much of our time talking about faith and family and living our lives for more. It was as if we had been long lost friends. Such a sweet time!
Fast forward to our session time when Rachel was poised and ready for her time in front of the camera. Her sister in law Kelly came along and together we all had two hours of downright fun at the farm! I felt like I truly was capturing who Rachel is… a confident young woman, ready to walk into whatever the Lord has in store for her life. In obedience and faith- with full assurance of who He is and that He is trustworthy. And good.
I am secretly envious of her as she heads down to Biola University this fall- we have family at Biola whom I would love to hang out with on a weekly basis, and not to mention that this university is only miles from Disneyland— which Rachel is a big fan of as well–What more could you ask of a girl- godliness and great taste! ;)
As if Rachel didn’t have enough things going for her, she is also an entrepreneur in the making. She has been baking for many years and most recently has been designing wedding, anniversary and birthday cakes. Her cakes are downright beautiful art pieces but also delicious! After her photo shoot her dad and mom were so kind to have dinner for us ready and we shared hours of conversation after the shoot and of course followed that up with the delicious cake Rachel had baked as her photo shoot “prop”.
I know I say this often but I feel so blessed by the many people I get to meet and their genuine kindness to me. John, Melanie and Rachel (and Kelly), thank you so much for your kind hospitality, your genuine interest in my life and work and testimony and especially for entrusting these precious memories to me. This has been such a sweet time for me. Getting to know your family has been such a treat. Thank you for blessing me as you have. With appreciation, Xiomara.
Below are a few of my favorite images to date. The first because I truly feel the moment described in this one image. Rachel walking away from the known towards her unknown in full assurance that He who created the light guides her. As a mom, this is something that I realize we grow our children to do, but actually doing it takes courage for all involved. Rachel stands courageous- as does her sweet momma!
The following captures a unique and deeply personal moment in Rachel’s life. I simply asked her to stand in the field and pray- to thank God for all his blessings. I wanted to capture a relationship that is very dear to her but capture it in a way that was natural and unposed. And so this image took shape. It means so much to me, and I hope Rachel as well, as it is an image that comes from the soul rather than something that is pinterest made. I hope you too can enjoy it as much as I do. I’d love to hear your thought below!
